Herbal “Kahlua” Coffee Recipe

Another morning has come. After a rough night of not sleeping well, you feel depleted. Wishing you could press snooze one more time, you begrudgingly roll out of bed. You stumble down the cold hall straight to coffee maker. How fast can I chug this?

Does this sound familiar?

In our fast-paced society, we are filled with stressful demands and our worth is often based on our productivity level. In order to keep up the pace, we rely on coffee to function.

But what if we could nourish our bodies at the cellular level, support our natural ability to handle stress, and enjoy the delicious bitter taste of coffee simultaneously?

We can! This recipe is comprised of herbal goodness, with optional coffee beans. Because who wants to withdraw from coffee anyway? Certainly not me.

These herbs are chosen for their medicinal capabilities. Known to stimulate lymphatic flow, this combination will strengthen natural immunity and detox pathways. Aiding in liver detox, more balanced moods and hormone levels are supported. Most of these herbs are bitters, which enhance digestion by stimulating bile flow. Bitters also boost nutrient absorption and the ability to process and assimilate healthy fats for smooth, supple skin. The inclusion of an adaptogen allows the body to respond to stress in a nourishing way. Packed with antioxidants and micronutrients, this blend delivers sustainable energy in a bioavailable way. Finally, the taste is a delectable herbal Kahlua elixir.

Herbal “Kahlua” Coffee Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp coffee grounds optional (I enjoy Purity Coffee, either regular or decaf will work)
  • 3 Tbsp chicory root
  • 3 Tbsp dandelion root roasted
  • 2 Tbsp cacao nibs
  • 2 Tbsp burdock root
  • 1 tsp licorice root
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 cup organic vodka (I used Prairie organic vodka)
  • 1 cup local raw honey

Directions

  1. In a quart-sized mason jar, layer the dried herbs, vanilla bean, and freshly ground coffee beans (if using). The quart jar should be just under halfway full.
  2. Pour vodka over the herbs.
  3. Drizzle the raw honey, filling the jar to the top.
  4. Add more vodka as necessary to make sure the volume is filled to the brim. (Leaving air headspace causes oxidation.)
  5. Seal the jar with the metal lid. (Line the inside of the lid with parchment paper if you prefer to reuse the lid. The alcohol will corrode the lid otherwise.)
  6. Allow the elixir to sit in a cool, dark place for 6 weeks. Remember to shake the jar every day.
  7. After 6 weeks, strain the elixir through cheesecloth. Squeeze every last drop out of the herbs.
  8. Compost the used herbs.
  9. Pour the elixir into a clean jar. Enjoy!

How to Use This Elixir (shelf life: 2 years after bottling)

  • Add 1 Tbsp to filtered water or sparkling water and consume before meals to enhance digestion and nutrient assimilation
  • Add 1 Tbsp to your morning coffee and combine with fresh raw cream to support radiant skin and shiny hair
  • Gently heat 1 Tbsp and sip from an espresso cup to balance mood
  • Mix 1 Tbsp with alcohol of choice and add ice for a refreshing cocktail to cleanse and detoxify
  • Drizzle over raw ice cream for a sweet treat to fortify hormones
  • Easily enjoy by the spoonful to strengthen stress response

I hope you enjoy this tasty coffee blend as much as I do. Cheers to our health!
